Chi Zijian was born in 1964 in Mohe, described as China’s northernmost village, near the Russian border. The Chinese author made her literary debut in 1983 with the work *Under the Trees* and published more than forty books. She received the Lu Xun Literature Prize three times. In 2008, she was awarded the Mao Dun Prize for *Landscape in the Lake*, China’s highest literary award for fiction.
