Cesare Pavese

Cesare Pavese (1908–1950) was an Italian writer, translator and editor. He grew up in Santo Stefano Belbo in Piedmont and in Turin, and studied philology. Pavese translated English and American literature into Italian, including works by Herman Melville, William Faulkner and Sinclair Lewis. From 1938 he worked for the Turin-based publisher Einaudi. In 1935 he was sent into internal exile in Calabria. His best-known works include *The Beautiful Summer*, *The Moon and the Bonfires* and the diary *This Business of Living*. He received the Premio Strega in 1950 for *The Beautiful Summer*. He died by suicide in Turin later that year.
