Cees Nooteboom (1933–2026) was a Dutch writer, poet, and travel writer. Born in The Hague, he published his first novel, Philip and the Others (Philip en de anderen), in 1955. As a young author, he reported on events including the Hungarian Uprising, the SED party congress, and the student protests in Paris. His travel writing combines precise observation with reflective commentary. His best-known works include the novel Rituals, which was also adapted into a film, as well as The Following Story and All Souls. His widely translated body of work encompasses novels, short stories, poetry, and travel writing.
