Caroline Schlegel-Schelling (1763–1809) was born in Göttingen, the daughter of a university professor, and received a comprehensive education. She worked as a writer, translator, reviewer, and editor. After her first marriage, she married the literary critic August Wilhelm Schlegel in 1796; they separated in 1803. She later married the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling. Her extensive correspondence with figures including Goethe, Schiller, Fichte, Novalis, and Herder is regarded as an important historical record of German Romanticism. She also worked as a secretary for her husbands, Schlegel and Schelling.
