Carl Weissner was born in Karlsruhe in 1940 and studied English literature in Bonn and Heidelberg. From 1965 onward, he edited literary magazines including “UFO” and “Gasolin 23,” working among others with Jörg Fauser and Jürgen Ploog. During a two-year stay in New York beginning in 1966, he became acquainted with the Beat and underground scenes and met William S. Burroughs and Charles Bukowski. As a writer and translator, he translated their work into German and contributed particularly to establishing Bukowski’s reputation in Germany. Weissner died in Mannheim in 2012.
