Armistead Maupin, born in Washington in 1944, studied literature at the University of North Carolina and initially worked as a reporter for a news agency. He later wrote for Andy Warhol’s magazine Interview, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. He became known for Tales of the City, which he began publishing in 1976 as a daily serial in the San Francisco Chronicle. The stories were later published as a six-volume series, with three volumes serving as the basis for a television series.
