Bruce Chatwin (1940–1989) was born in Sheffield. He initially worked at the London auction house Sotheby’s, including as an art expert and head of its Impressionist department, before becoming a journalist for the Sunday Times and a freelance writer. From 1962 onward, he undertook extensive travels through Asia, Africa, Australia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. His best-known works include the travel book »In Patagonia«, the novels »The Songlines« and »The Viceroy of Ouidah«, and »Utz«. »The Viceroy of Ouidah« served as the basis for Werner Herzog’s film »Cobra Verde«. Chatwin died in Nice in 1989.
