Birgit Vanderbeke

Birgit Vanderbeke (1956–2021) was a German writer. She was born in Dahme/Mark, Brandenburg, and died in southern France. Her first story, “Das Muschelessen,” received the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 1990. Another well-known work, “Alberta empfängt einen Liebhaber,” became a bestseller. Vanderbeke’s extensive literary oeuvre received numerous awards, including the Kranichstein Literature Prize, the Roswitha Prize, the Solothurn Literature Prize, and the Hans Fallada Prize. In 2007, she held the Brothers Grimm Professorship at the University of Kassel.
