Bernhard Kegel, born in Berlin in 1953, studied chemistry and biology at the Free University of Berlin and earned his doctorate in 1991. After working in research, as an ecological consultant and as a lecturer, he began publishing novels and nonfiction in 1993. His numerous books often explore biological and ecological themes. His works include the debut novel *Wenzels Pilz*, as well as *Das Ölschieferskelett*, *Der Rote*, *Abgrund* and *Die Natur der Zukunft*. His books have received several journalism and nonfiction awards. Alongside his scientific and literary work, Kegel pursued jazz as a guitarist.
