Born in Graz in 1952, Bernd Hontschik trained in medicine in Frankfurt am Main and worked as a surgeon. In 1987, he completed his doctorate on the theory and practice of appendectomy; the work was published as a book and received the Roemer Prize of the German College for Psychosomatic Medicine in 1989. Hontschik served as a senior physician at Frankfurt-Höchst Hospital until 1991 and then ran his own surgical practice with an outpatient operating center until 2015. His books include »Körper, Seele, Mensch«; he also edited the »medizinHuman« series for Suhrkamp Verlag and wrote columns for the »Frankfurter Rundschau«. He has two adult children.
