Beate Thill (born 1952 in Baden-Baden) studied English and geography. From 1983 onward, she worked as a literary translator from English and French, focusing on literature from Africa and the Caribbean. Authors she translated into German include Édouard Glissant, Dany Laferrière, Patrick Chamoiseau, Tchicaya U Tam’si, Abdelwahab Meddeb, and Assia Djebar. She also worked as an interpreter and wrote on translation theory and for radio. In 2014, she received the International Literature Award from Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt for her translation of Dany Laferrière’s novel *The Enigma of the Return*.
