Axel Schildt

Axel Schildt (1951–2019) was Professor of Modern History at the University of Hamburg and director of the Research Centre for Contemporary History in Hamburg from 2002 to 2017. He was a member of the Hamburg Academy of Sciences and served on the board of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation. His research focused on the social and cultural history of Germany and Western Europe in the 20th century. He was most recently co-editor of the volume “Kommunistische Dissidenten. Das sowjetische Modell und seine Kritiker.”
