Author · 28 books

Arthur Machen (1863–1947), the pen name of Arthur Llewellyn Jones, was a Welsh writer and mystic. He wrote essays as well as supernatural, fantastical and macabre fiction. Among his best-known works is the horror novella *The Great God Pan*, which caused a scandal because of its unusually frank depiction of female sexuality for the Victorian era. His short story *The Bowmen* was at one point taken by newspaper readers as a factual account of supernatural figures intervening in wartime. Machen also translated the work of Rabelais into English.
