Arthur C. Clarke (1917–2008) was a British science-fiction author and writer of popular-science books. During the Second World War, he served as a technical officer in the Royal Air Force; afterward, he studied physics and mathematics at King’s College London. His first story appeared in the science-fiction magazine Astounding in 1946, followed by his first novel two years later. Over the following decades, Clarke wrote award-winning stories and novels as well as numerous popular-science articles and books. He was also known for anticipating technological developments in his nonfiction writing. He died in Sri Lanka in March 2008.
