Arnulf Baring (1932–2019) was a German historian, political scientist, and author. Born in Dresden, he initially worked as a journalist and editor for the German broadcaster WDR. After studying at Columbia University in New York and earning a doctorate in law from the Free University of Berlin, he completed his habilitation in 1968. From 1969 he taught at the Free University of Berlin, first political science and later contemporary history and international relations; he also taught in Paris and at Harvard. His best-known works include “Machtwechsel. Die Ära Brandt/Scheel” (1982) and “Scheitert Deutschland?” (1997). He also wrote books on Charles de Gaulle, the East German uprising of 17 June 1953, and Konrad Adenauer’s foreign policy.
