Armin Zweite studied literature, history, philosophy and art history in Kiel, Tübingen, Göttingen, Brussels and Berkeley. After working in various curatorial roles, he directed the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich from 1974 to 1990, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf until 2007, and the Museum Brandhorst in Munich until 2013. He published extensively and curated exhibitions on art of the 16th, 19th and 20th centuries.
