Annemarie Schwarzenbach

Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908–1942) was a Swiss writer, journalist, and photographer. She studied history in Zurich and Paris and received her doctorate in 1931. Her journalistic and photographic work grew out of extensive travels through Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Africa. In the 1930s, she was a close friend of Erika and Klaus Mann and reported on political and social changes of her time. Her early works include the 1931 novel *Freunde um Bernhard*. Schwarzenbach died in 1942 after a cycling accident in Sils in the Engadin region of Switzerland.
