Angela Yvonne Davis is a political activist, scholar, author, and professor emerita at the University of California. She gained international prominence in the 1960s as a leading representative of the Communist Party USA and through her involvement in the civil rights movement. Her teaching and research addressed feminism, African American studies, critical theory, Marxism, philosophy, and the history of punishment and prisons. In 1970, she was tried in California for alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Judge Harold Haley and was acquitted.
