A. N. Afanasjew was born in 1826 in the Voronezh Governorate and died in Moscow in 1871. He studied law and worked as an archivist at the Moscow Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1849. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, he collected and published Russian folk tales; a first edition appeared in 1855. He is best known for this collection, which gained international recognition.
