Alice Vollenweider (1927–2011) was born in Zurich and studied Romance languages and literature in Zurich, Paris, and Naples. She worked as a literary critic and translated from Italian into German, including works by Natalia Ginzburg, Luigi Malerba, Eugenio Montale, and Giacomo Leopardi. She also published critical essays on contemporary Italian literature and numerous books on cooking, including “Italy’s Provinces and Their Cuisine” and “The Cuisine of Tuscany.”
