Alice Berend

Alice Berend (1875–1938) was a German writer of Jewish heritage. She began by contributing to various newspapers and later published novels, many of them featuring historical and contemporary depictions of Berlin. Her works, including the novel “Spreemann & Co.,” first published in 1916, reached print runs of more than 100,000 copies before 1933. After the National Socialists banned and burned her books, she emigrated first to Switzerland and later to Italy.
