Alfred Schmidt (1931–2012) was a German philosopher and sociologist. He studied history, English studies and the classical philologies, and later philosophy and sociology in Frankfurt am Main. In 1960 he received his doctorate for a study of the concept of nature in Marx’s thought, written under Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. From 1972, he was professor of philosophy and sociology at Goethe University Frankfurt. His areas of research included critical theory, philosophical materialism, the Enlightenment, Freud, Goethe and Schopenhauer. His works include »Philosophie nach Freud« and »Marx als Philosoph«.
