Alfred Kubin

Alfred Kubin (1877–1959) was an Austrian graphic artist, draughtsman, illustrator, painter, and writer. Born in Leitmeritz, Bohemia, he first trained as a photographer before studying graphic art and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After study trips to France, Italy, and the Balkans, he worked as an independent artist from 1906 onward. He became known particularly as an illustrator and author associated with the Expressionist circle. His principal literary work is the novel *The Other Side*.
