Alexander Volkov (1891–1977) was a Russian teacher, translator, mathematics professor, and author of children’s books. In addition to French and German, he taught himself English. He became known for his retelling of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” published in 1939 in the Soviet Union as “The Wizard of the Emerald City.” Following its success, Volkov wrote five sequels, developing the story further in his own works.
