Alexander Demandt, born in Marburg in 1937, was a professor of ancient history at Freie Universität Berlin, where he taught until his retirement. He worked for around thirty years as an ancient historian and cultural historian. His publications include “The Fall of Rome,” “The Celts,” “Alexander the Great,” “A History of Late Antiquity,” and “Marcus Aurelius: The Emperor and His World.” Together with Barbara Demandt, he edited “Theodor Mommsen: Roman Imperial History.”
