Albert Camus (1913–1960) was a French writer, philosopher, and journalist. He was born in Mondovi in French North Africa, now Algeria, and studied philosophy at the University of Algiers. Alongside his journalistic work, he was active in the theatre and took part in the French Resistance against National Socialism. His best-known works include the novels *The Stranger* and *The Plague*, as well as the essay *The Myth of Sisyphus*. Camus received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. He died in a car accident in France in 1960.
