Achim Aurnhammer (born 1952) studied German literature, history and Italian studies in Heidelberg and Florence. After teaching in Heidelberg and Berlin, he became a professor of modern German literary history at the University of Freiburg in the 1990s, where he taught until his retirement in 2020. His research focused on early modern literature, German-Italian literary relations, the history of motifs and literary modernism. In later work, he also examined processes of heroization and comparative approaches to heroism. His publications include Deutsche Literatur der Frühen Neuzeit (2019), Christus als Held und seine heroische Nachfolge (2020) and Deutsch-chinesische Helden und Anti-Helden (2020). He was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences from 2013.
