Honestly? It ain't that bad. I knew this was Austen's least liked novel, and that people really dislike Fanny as a heroine, but, while the novel had its weaknesses like making us read 100 pages about a play that would never be played, Fanny as a character is so good. Quiet, sensitive, having endured abuse and neglect, she still manages to be fair and kind. She lacks the wit, strength and maturity of other Austen heroines but has another kind of strength and so much depth herself. But cousins marrying? Big oof. Good thing the romance plot was almost only an after thought in this one.
