I had read a lot of good things about the book, a dark story that sounded good around Halloween time. The book starts out interesting, a family that has fallen victim to an apparent "kidnapping case", but then turns around so that the 3 young daughters they thought had disappeared reappear a month later. You are introduced to the events of the past while following the thoughts of the main character, Iris, in her everyday life. One day, however, one of the three daughters disappears again. And Iris, as well as her sister vivi, feel that something is wrong. I liked how the three siblings are intertwined. They could each feel and find each other. I also liked that each of the 3 appearances had a certain "magic/power" that allowed them to manipulate and control the people around them. However, this was only possible for those who had never been close to death. It was interesting to learn what the 3 went through. The story as a whole was quite good, but I had trouble forcing myself to continue through the book, especially towards the end. Somehow, I realized relatively early on in the story that the 3 sisters were not the little children who were kidnapped, but that they may have kidnapped the little girls in order to steal their lives 10years ago. Especially in the old folklore about Scotland, there was always talk of certain "fairies" stealing children and then swapping them, or people slipping through certain gates into another world and being trapped there. So the story of the book is based on this old folklore. But in this case it's more about "halfway", a kind of forecourt of the afterlife where souls hide when they can't or won't let go: something like the limbo? Be that as it may, the story is very dark and speaks of a kind of gloomy world that exists alongside the world of the living and the dead. A world on horseback in which souls are trapped. I only skimmed the last chapter after the 3 young women were back in the world of the living. They have been changelings and have stolen the shell of the 3 young girls of the Hallow family by summoning them to the "between world". However, it is not clear why they were able to do this and who they were before they stole the lives of the 3 little girls and why they did it. All we know is that they did it. I got a bit impatient towards the end, as I said. It was good but didn't flash me as much as I thought it would. I also have to mention that I didn’t really felt close to any of the characters. In my opinion, Iris often acted very stupid and naive, Vivi got on my nerves with her constant outbursts of anger and all the alcohol consumption, while Grey was just totally weird, along the lines of "the bad guy who wanted to do something good" - the mother also sucked. That's just my personal view. It was a food book, but sisnt caught me too much.

I really liked the beginning and the overall vibe of the whole book but as the story progressed I unfortunately did not enjoy most of the reveals and twists surrounding the infamous Hollow sisters.

This definitely was the weirdest book I've ever read - and I loved every second of it. (Oh and the cover!!)
