Elantris

By Brandon Sanderson

Format:Hardcover

Elantris was the capital of Arelon: gigantic, beautiful, literally radiant, filled with benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities for the benefit of all. Yet each of these demigods was once an ordinary person until touched by the mysterious transforming power of the Shaod. Ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, leper-like, powerless creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling.Arelon's new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping -- based on their correspondence -- to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.Other Tor books by Brandon SandersonThe CosmereThe Stormlight ArchiveThe Way of KingsWords of RadianceEdgedancer (Novella)Oathbringer (forthcoming)The Mistborn trilogyMistborn: The Final EmpireThe Well of AscensionThe Hero of AgesMistborn: The Wax and Wayne seriesAlloy of LawShadows of SelfBands of MourningCollectionArcanum UnboundedOther Cosmere novelsElantrisWarbreakerThe Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians seriesAlcatraz vs. the Evil LibrariansThe Scrivener's BonesThe Knights of CrystalliaThe Shattered LensThe Dark TalentThe Rithmatist seriesThe RithmatistOther books by Brandon SandersonThe ReckonersSteelheartFirefightCalamity

If I did not already know that Elantris was Sanderson’s debut it would have left me speechless. The fact that he managed to create such a huge magic system, so many complex characters, and an entire world full of politics and religion all in a standalone is incredible. And Sarene! Finally a tall female protagonist who does not fit the usual “I am small and delicate” trope. She is clever, confident, and knows exactly what she wants. She does not wait to be saved she takes matters into her own hands. The story completely pulled me in. A fallen city once home to godlike beings, a cursed prince trying to bring hope into the chaos, and a princess navigating political games on the outside. And then there is Hrathen, the antihero who in the end realizes what is right and wrong such a well written arc. And those last hundred pages of course a true Sanderlanche. The scene with the children absolutely terrified me I could hardly keep reading. A huge recommendation especially for anyone wanting to dive into Sanderson’s world for the first time.

I loved the setting and was hooked from the first chapter. The characters were so interesting, I especially loved Sarene and her struggle to be herself, but also the wish to fit into a group and to find someone, who loves her, for everything she is. Also I think the story has some interesting takes on religion and politics. I usually don’t like stories that are heavy on politics, but here it was very fitting and interesting.
