Initially the Davenports sparked my interest because of the unique setting. I have never read a book about rich black families in society from the 1900s. While starting to read I realized I had trouble picturing the scenes because I am not used to this scenery with only black people. Well, the premise was set out be quite interesting it turned out to become rather flat and dull after introducing all characters and their (supposed) love interests. For my personal enjoyment, it lacked more depth within the different characters of the girls. Often I could not fully understand, or comprehend the decisions each of them made, as well as the male leads. While I could feel Helens excitement for Automobile repair, Amy-Roses deep desire to open a salon didn’t not nest itself for me. Also I couldn’t understand how a character described like Mr. Davenport could be so set in his ways to not understand Johns planned advancement of the family business.
