One Golden Summer

von Carley Fortune

Format:Hardcover

A radiant, new escape to the lake from #1 New York Times bestselling author Carley FortuneI never anticipated Charlie Florek.Good things happen at the lake. That’s what Alice’s grandmother says, and it’s true. Alice spent just one summer there at a cottage with Nan when she was seventeen—it’s where she took that photo, the one of three grinning teenagers in a yellow speedboat, the image that changed her life. Now Alice lives behind a lens. As a photographer, she’s most comfortable on the sidelines, letting other people shine. Lately though, she’s been itching for something more, and when Nan falls and breaks her hip, Alice comes up with a plan for them both: another summer in that magical place, Barry’s Bay. But as soon as they settle in, their peace is disrupted by the roar of a familiar yellow boat, and the man driving it.Charlie Florek was nineteen when Alice took his photo from afar. Now he’s all grown up—a shameless flirt, who manages to make Nan laugh and Alice long to be seventeen again, when life was simpler, when taking pictures was just for fun. Sun-slanted days and warm nights out on the lake with Charlie are a balm for Alice’s soul, but when she looks up and sees his piercing green gaze directly on her, she begins to worry for her heart.Because Alice sees people—that’s why she is so good at what she does—but she’s never met someone who looks and sees her right back.

A worthwhile summer read. There is plenty of anticipation throughout, with a satisfying payoff in the end. I would recommend reading Every Summer After before One Golden Summer. You don’t necessarily need to, but I think it makes the experience more enjoyable as you learn where the previouse characters ended up. In retrospect, I would have loved to know more about Nan’s story. I think her perspective could make a lovely addition to the universe. Overall, One Golden Summer was an enjoyable read, although at times I found it a little frustrating that the “revelation” came quite late in the story. The reason for Charlie’s hesitation to share the truth was somewhat reasonable, but it also felt slightly too constructed at times. That said, I would definitely recommend it. It’s an easy, light, and enjoyable summer read.

Once again Carley Fortune delivers a gorgeous setting, compelling characters, and emotions that feel genuinely real. While I enjoyed the journey, I found the ending somewhat predictable and wished for something more original. Every Summer After remains my favorite of her books.

🫧 #OneGoldenSummer feels exactly like the title promises: warm, nostalgic and softly golden☀️ Once again, Carley Fortune’s writing is incredibly accessible and immersive🤩 It feels effortless and natural, making the story so easy to dive into🥰 The summer setting is beautifully atmospheric - long golden evenings and quiet mornings by the water🌊 The pacing also mirrors summer itself: slow, reflective, and intentional. One of the most meaningful parts of this book was the relationship between Alice and her grandmother👭🏽 Their bond carries so much tenderness, history and emotional weight. I truly felt the love, the shared memories and the fear of time slipping away. Also, Alice’s “list” adds a gentle sense of purpose and adventure - a reminder to live fully and intentionally - I just loved it📋 And then there’s Charlie. He isn’t just charming - he’s caring, observant, and deeply supportive. The way he shows up for Alice, takes care of her, and quietly supports her growth is incredibly endearing🥹 His love language feels like consistency and protection, and that emotional steadiness really worked for me❤️‍🩹 However, I did wish for a bit more honesty and transparency from Charlie at certain moments😢 Some withheld information created tension, but it also felt slightly frustrating and preventable... I also found parts of the *!!! SPOILER ALERT!!!* illness storyline somewhat predictable😭 While it definitely added emotional gravity and higher stakes, I wasn’t entirely surprised by the direction it took😅 Final thoughts?✨ Well, One Golden Summer is a warm, heart-centered story about love, memory, and the quiet transformations that happen when we return to places that shaped us. It’s predictable in places, yes - but it’s also comforting, emotionally tender and beautifully summery💛 . . . . . . Rating : 4⭐️ Spice : 2🌶️ Recommendation : ✅
