It is a powerful story about honour, grief, and the cost of a rigid system that demands everything from its people, even from children. - Little spoilers ahead - Mamoru will stay with me for a long time. Thinking about him still hurts. He was brave, kind, and full of potential, the kind of person who would have become a very good man. His loss is the emotional centre of the story. And god it still hurts. He was my favourite character. Misaki is such a great character. Getting back the fierce, wild part of herself she had buried for years was incredible. Her strength and character development is amazing. Takeru was a character I wanted to hate, and for a while I did. How he treated Misaki was far from okay. But as his past was revealed, my feelings changed. I started to understand him, and in the end, like Misaki, I even grew to care about him. -> Wholeness, she had learned, was not the absence of pain but the ability to hold it. -> A dragon knew when he was looking at worms and snakes. -> In the falling snow, Takeru stared at the woman he had married and saw her for the first time. -> “A warrior’s sword isn’t made of ice or metal. It is his soul, his focus, his conviction. -> If we don’t remember the way they died, then we’re not remembering them for who they were.” -> “A warrior’s legacy is essential to his soul. To deny what happened here—to ourselves or to anyone else—is the greatest disservice we could do our dead.”
Reviewed by Amely🦋Ich genieße den Schreibtstil von M. L Wang total!! Dies ist das zweite Buch welches ich von ihr gelesen habe und dieses war vom schreiben her genauso packend wie das erste! Eine wunderschöne, emotionale Geschichte welche auf clevere Art und Weise in Perspektive von Mutter und Sohn geschrieben wurde. Das Buch kann als standalone Fantasy Buch gelesen werden, man hat beim Lesen jedoch das Gefühl, dass einem gewisse Informationen fehlen welche in der Welt aber anscheinend schon etabliert sind. Ich kann jedem nur empfehlen dieses Buch zu lesen. Taschentücher jedoch bereithalten!
Reviewed by Yvonne Beeindruckender Stand-alone High-Fantasy-Roman. Sehr starkes Worldbuilding und ein Magiesystem aus elementarer Magie und Martial Arts, was unglaublich cinematisch dargestellt wird. Die Geschichte kalibriert sich zwischendurch neu - was beim Lesen herausfordernd sein kann, weil mit klassischen Fantasy-Strukturen gebrochen wird. Es geht also nicht nur um die elementaren Kampfkünste eines abgelegenen Bergreichs, das von jahrhundertealten Traditionen geprägt ist, sondern auch um Familiendynamiken, um Vergangenheit, um Verlust - und um Trauer.

Dieses Worldbuilding ist einfach klasse und ich bin echt salty, dass The Sword of Kaigen nur ein Standalone ist. 🥲 Da der Anfang etwas holprig für mich war, keine vollen 5 Sterne aber glaubt mir, dieses Buch ist die feinste Fantasy Lektüre. ⚔️
