Rezension von Raphaela Es ist die alte Story, die Meerjungfrau will mehr sehen, als das Meer. Sie verliebt sich in einen Fischer und wird seine Frau und sie lebten glücklich bis an sein Lebensende. Doch danach ging ihr Leben weiter. Nach Jahrzehnten der Einsamkeit folgt sie dem Angebot eines anderen Mannes nach New York, Sie soll die neueste Attraktion werden in P.T. Barnums American Museum. Ein Abenteuer, auf das sie sich einlassen will, um die Welt sehen zu können, nicht ahnend, was dies für sie bedeutet. Ich mag Henrys Stil sehr sehr gern und bin seit "Near the Bone" großer Fan. Die Kombination aus Motiven der kleinen Meerjungfrau und der Geschichte von P.T. Barnums Fiji Meerjungfrau hat durchaus ihren Reiz, dennoch ist es bislang das schwächste ihrer Bücher. Es passiert einfach zu wenig für meinen Geschmack auf den 300 Seiten. es ist ein langes Zaudern und Zagen, Zweifeln und Verhandeln, Zurückrudern und doch wieder Durchstarten und irgendwie zieht es sich. Bisweilen scheint es mehr um die Hybris des weißen Mannes zu gehen, als um die Geschichte einer Meerjungfrau und gerade diese Passagen in denen es Mann vs Kreatur, Mann vs Frau, weißer Mann vs andere Völker heißt, sind etwas moralinsauer und wiederholend. Für die Romance Leser ist das Buch sicherlich interessanter.

My heart keeps its own secrets, and they don’t belong to you or anyone else just because you’ve seen me with a fish tail.” Sadly, this was my first book written by Christina Henry. Many people said that her books about Alice are amazing, that‘s why I started with one of her books. I should‘ve started with Alice because The Mermaid (and I absolutely love Mermaids), was SO SO boring! It was horrible to get through this book. Henry repeats a lot of Amelia‘s story or of her thoughts. Chapter 5 was short but a bit exciting in the beginning. My excitement had completely faded away by the time I reached the end of the Chapter.. The long periods of time I spent reading.. it was tedious. Sorry. But I love how Barnum is portrayed because he was an a**hole and is also portrayed as an a**hole. (He was NOT the hero Hugh Jackman singing and laughing.) Anyways, I loved how Amelia fitted into the human world and became more and more a feminist. Maybe, I‘ll give Henry a second chance, although I don‘t really like Alice that much.
