I’d give The Guest List a solid 3 stars. I can see why this book sits in that middle ground for so many readers. It is very good at building atmosphere and suspense, but much less convincing when it comes to emotional depth and character. What worked for me was the setting. The remote Irish island, the storm, the wedding guests trapped together, it creates an immediate sense of pressure and unease. Foley understands that weddings are already emotionally charged spaces full of comparison, jealousy, and buried resentment, and she uses that to good effect. From the beginning, the book lets you feel that something is going to go wrong, even when everything still looks polished on the surface. The multiple points of view kept the story moving, but they also kept me at a distance. I was always aware that each character existed mainly to be a suspect. I enjoyed figuring out how everyone was connected, but I never really felt close to any of them. It read more like a carefully arranged puzzle than a group of people I could truly care about. I also found the cast a little exhausting. Almost everyone is deeply unpleasant in one way or another, which I know is intentional, but it made the middle section drag for me. When everyone is morally compromised, the emotional stakes start to flatten. I was curious about the mystery, but not especially invested in who would survive. That said, the structure is effective. Foley reveals information in a way that keeps shifting your understanding of what has happened, and by the time the truth comes out, it feels darkly inevitable. The ending works because it shows how small, long held cruelties can build into something destructive. Overall, The Guest List is a readable, well constructed thriller that I never hated, but also never loved. It did its job in keeping me turning pages, even if it never quite made me feel anything deeper than surface level intrigue.
