The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable. While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. This is easily my favorite Abby Jimenez book so far. Alexis, a legacy doctor trapped by her family’s expectations and an emotionally abusive relationship, meets Daniel, a kind, small-town mayor with a simple, grounded life. Their romance begins by chance and grows into a deeply supportive, genuine relationship despite their very different worlds. The conflict felt realistic and meaningful, with strong character growth on both sides—Alexis learning to reclaim her agency and Daniel stepping beyond his comfort zone. The book thoughtfully explores emotional abuse, balancing heavy themes with warmth, humor, and well-developed side characters. Funny, emotional, and heartfelt, it kept me invested until the end.

This was my first Abby Jimenez book and what can I say? I devoured it! I only needed a few chapters to feel so invested in the story, in the characters and was already laughing on every page, went back to being serious and I enjoyed every part of it! I felt so much empathy with both, Alexis and Daniel and wanted them so badly to realize that they are already enough! Alexis is under a lot of pressure to carry on the century-long family legacy of working at the Royaume Northwestern Hospital with her parents constantly pushing her to achieve more and more. Her own goals doesn’t matter. Daniel, who lives in a small-town that’s dedicated to be a popular vacation spot in the summer, runs his own family business and is a carpenter. With his family being the soul of Wakan since its founding and him being the only Grant ancestor left, he also carries on the family legacy with his whole heart. Those two belong to completely different worlds and when they meet it is obvious that their relationship could never be long-term. But Wakan has this effect on people…or is it Daniel? Either way, a lot more often than planned, Alexis can’t keep herself from breaking out of her world to let Daniel give her calm and peace. I absolutely loved how this book combines so many humorous scenes with deeply emotional ones. Daniel and Alexis both have their difficult pasts and Abby Jimenez somehow manages to create the perfect mixture between lightness and depth. The only thing I had a bit of a hard time with, were the last couple of pages, where we have a lot of back and fourth and one of the protagonists, without spoilering anything here, really needs a looong time to realize what’s best for them and to be brave enough to eventually make a choice. But I also cannot imagine how I myself would act if I were in such a situation, so I couldn’t judge how the the characters feel and act. Overall, it’s definitely one of my most favorite romcoms I’ve read so far and I am SO excited to read more of Abby Jimenez!!
Good start for the series
Spicelevel: mehr behind the door.
