Winner of the Polari Prize 2023 Shortlisted for the Gordon Bowker Volcano Prize 'A gothic fairy tale, sublime in its creepiness' - Florence Welch Our Wives Under The Sea is the haunting novel from Julia Armfiled, the critically acclaimed author of Salt Slow. It's a story of falling in love, loss, grief, and what life there is in the deep, deep sea. Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. But It soon becomes clear that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home. Memories of what they had before - the jokes they shared, the films they watched, all the small things that made Leah hers - only remind Miri of what she stands to lose. Living in the same space but suddenly separate, Miri comes to realize that the life that they had might be gone. 'A wonderful novel, deeply romantic and fabulously strange' - Sarah Waters, author of Ghost Wall 'Part bruisingly tender love story, part nerve-clanging submarine thriller' - The Times

I really wanted to like this book. The cover is gorgeous and the premise sounded fascinating. Not to mention that Armfield's writing itself is wonderful. The latter is the reason I'm giving 2.5 stars, because the actual story dragged on without much happening. For the whole focus being on only two characters, I feel like I couldn't build a connection to either of them. Miri's struggles with reconciling with the changes in Leah since her return should have invoked some feeling within me, but the only emotion I felt was frustration. It seemed to me, like nothing was happening. We don't learn why the submarine stopped working, what is up with that shady company who sent Leah and her team down there or even what happened to her crew mates. We can only wonder. The last point would be fine to me (leave some mystery out there), if any of the other questions had been answered. Not to mention that we meet quite a few background characters who have a more or less deep friendship with the main characters, but they end up giving no deeper meaning to the story. At least that's how I feel. In the end, I only finished the book because I hoped for some pay off at the end and was very much disappointed.

Traurig-schön mit Horror-/Fantasy-Elementen und wunderbar poetisch. Ein Buch über Liebe und Loslassen.
