I wanted to adore this book. I really wanted to. I enjoyed it, but parts felt like a slog. I wanted it to be scarier. I feel like King spent so much time on the detail of the wider Derry population and history of the place, that other areas were lacking. It seems to be a very self indulgent project. That being said, the story is brilliant. The writing is on another level, the characters so dear to the reader. King has a way of writing from a child’s perspective which is astounding. Read this book if you love King’s writing, but don’t expect a horror story. Expect an intricately woven fabric of friendship, childhood, character development and lots and lots and lots of pages.
