Rezension von Peanut"Butcher's Crossing" war unglaublich fesselnd. John Williams schafft es, die Geschichte in einem perfekten Tempo entwickeln zu lassen. Jedes Kapitel fühlt sich wie ein neuer Abschnitt mit neuen Herausforderungen an. Die Sprache ist dabei sehr klar und eher ruhig. Die Charaktere sind toll beschrieben, und man erfährt immer genug Hintergrundwissen, um mit ihnen zu sympathisieren. Am interessantesten fand ich eigentlich die Gedanken des Protagonisten. Er wirkt oft nachdenklich, und Williams beschreibt seine Gedanken wie eine Suche nach Sinn. Der Protagonist bricht sein Studium in Harvard ab, um sich selbst in der Natur zu finden. Er weiß gar nicht so richtig, was er sucht, aber es wird deutlich, dass er sich etwas erhofft. Letztendlich kommt er mit leeren Händen von einer langen, anstrengenden Jagd zurück, und alles hat sich geändert. Diese Erfahrung ist brutal und zerstört das Leben seiner Mitreisenden. Der Protagonist merkt, dass seine Suche nicht erfolgreich war, und es wirkt, als ob es von Anfang an nichts zu finden gab.
