The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs...

In one of the reviews here I read that this book was emotionally draining and I agree. There were times where I just couldn’t take in more of it, needed a break from the dystopian future that doesn’t seem as far away as it might did when Atwood wrote this story. A must read in troubling times for women rights like now.

MarsidaRezension von Marsida

a lot of people say the storyline of this book is so unrealistic and “way out there” but there are so many parallels to our still very patriarchal society. especially when you see what’s happening in the us at the moment. technically i give the book 4.5 because there wasn’t an actual plot with a resolved ending but i loved the writing style. i wish it was much longer so we could explore the characters more in depth. nevertheless a great starting point for the show!

A very strange book

Franziska GieseckeRezension von Franziska Giesecke

Hear me out! This is a well written book by a great woman. Atwood’s ideas are uniquely feminist. However... I regret watching the series first. The book takes so much space explaining this new world, that overall nothing much happens. Watching the series before reading the book, I knew about the rules, roles and uniforms, which made the explanation part incredibly boring. This review is entirely unfair and I loathe myself for (once gain!!) not being patient enough to read the book first.
