von Zoulfa Katouh

Format:Hardcover

A love letter to Syria and its people, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow is a speculative novel set amid the Syrian Revolution, burning with the fires of hope, love, and possibility. Perfect for fans of The Book Thief and Salt to the Sea.Salama Kassab was a pharmacy student when the cries for freedom broke out in Syria. She still had her parents and her big brother; she still had her home. She had a normal teenager’s life. Now Salama volunteers at a hospital in Homs, helping the wounded who flood through the doors daily. Secretly, though, she is desperate to find a way out of her beloved country before her sister-in-law, Layla, gives birth. So desperate, that she has manifested a physical embodiment of her fear in the form of her imagined companion, Khawf, who haunts her every move in an effort to keep her safe. But even with Khawf pressing her to leave, Salama is torn between her loyalty to her country and her conviction to survive. Salama must contend with bullets and bombs, military assaults, and her shifting sense of morality before she might finally breathe free. And when she crosses paths with the boy she was supposed to meet one fateful day, she starts to doubt her resolve in leaving home at all.Soon, Salama must learn to see the events around her for what they truly are—not a war, but a revolution—and decide how she, too, will cry for Syria’s freedom.

It was heartbreaking but also really beautiful. This book has so many scenes that just shatter you and yet, somehow, it still manages to show a little glimmer of hope. I highlighted soooo many quotes I might as well have just painted the whole book yellow. And yes, of course I cried (obviously). At this point I’ll probably start tearing up every time I see a lemon🍋

This has genuinely crushed my heart, given me hope, made me angry and cry as well as smile and feel resilience bloom. What a story, definitely recommend. Be prepared for so many emotions and being angry at the world's injustice.

I have absolutely no words. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. “He and I are owed a love story that doesn’t end in tragedy”

This book broke me and healed me, only to break me again. The book tells the story of Salama, an 18 year old girl who lives in Syria with her best friend and sister-in-law Layla, who is pregnant. She has lost her entire family in the war and works as a doctor/surgeon in the hospital, even though she has only just completed a year of pharmacy studies, trying to save lives. Inside, she struggles with herself and tries to find out what matters more to her: The promise she made to her brother to take care of his wife, to leave Syria when in doubt and save both of their lives or to stay there , keep saving lives of the wounded civilians. I love how Zoulfa describes the characters, the setting, everything... the book is just great. I could go on talking about the book for hours, but I'll stop now. This is absolutely a new favorite. You have to read this. --- Update: And yes, I don't know enough about the Syrian War to evaluate how correct the data is and the FSA is probably also not that great as descripted in the book, but still it was very good. So: question what you read!
