Zygmunt Bauman

Zygmunt Bauman (1925–2017), born in Poznań and deceased in Leeds, was a Polish-British sociologist and philosopher. After his family fled to the Soviet Union, he initially served in the Polish military and security apparatus before pursuing an academic career. He taught at the University of Warsaw from 1954, received his habilitation there in 1960, and emigrated to Israel in 1968. From 1971 to 1990, he was Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds. Among his best-known works is “Modernity and the Holocaust” (1989), published in German as “Dialektik der Ordnung. Die Moderne und der Holocaust.” Bauman received, among other honors, the Theodor W. Adorno Award in 1998 and the Prince of Asturias Award in 2013.
