Yasmina Khadra is the pen name of Algerian writer Mohammed Moulessehoul, who was born in Kenadsa in 1955. At his father’s request, he attended a military school and later became a senior officer in the Algerian army. He published his early novels under his wife’s female name to circumvent Algeria’s strict censorship regulations. He became known in particular for the crime novels “Morituri,” “Double Blanc,” and “The Autumn of the Phantoms,” featuring police commissioner Brahim Llob; the books were later grouped as the Algiers Trilogy. His other works include “What the Day Owes the Night,” “The Attack,” and “Khalil.” His novels have been translated into numerous languages.
