Xiaolu Guo, born in 1973 in a small town in southern China, is a Chinese author and filmmaker. At 18, she moved to Beijing and studied at a film school. Her novel “Village of Stone,” written in China, was published in 2004; she subsequently began writing in English. In 2013, she was included on Granta’s list of the Best Young British Novelists. Her novels have received multiple nominations for literary prizes, and “I Am China” was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize. Her autobiography “Once Upon a Time in the East” won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2017.
