Woody Allen was born Allen Stewart Konigsberg in Brooklyn in 1935. At the age of 15, he began earning money by writing jokes for agencies, and in 1960 he started his career as a stand-up comedian. His shy, awkward persona became the distinctive style of the character Woody Allen. He worked as a writer, director and actor and was involved in more than 40 films as a screenwriter and director from 1965 onward. He also wrote short stories, plays and columns, including for The New Yorker, and was an enthusiastic jazz musician.
