Wolfgang Mieder (born 1944) is a German scholar of German studies and folklore. He taught at the University of Vermont from 1971, serving for more than three decades as head of its Department of German and Slavic Studies; he is now professor emeritus there. His main field of research is paremiology, the study of proverbs. His work examines the use and function of proverbs in literature, the media, art, advertising, and politics. His publications include “Spruchschlösser (ab)bauen,” “Entkernte Weisheiten,” and the “International Bibliography of Paremiology and Phraseology.” Since 1984, he has edited the yearbook “Proverbium.”
