Wolfgang Krohn

Wolfgang Krohn (born 1941 in Hamburg) is a German sociologist of technology and philosopher of science. He studied philosophy and social sciences in Hamburg, Göttingen, and Marburg, and earned his doctorate under Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker with a thesis on formal logic in Hegel’s “Science of Logic.” From 1971 to 1981, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of the Living Conditions of the Scientific-Technical World in Starnberg. From 1992 to 2006, he was Professor of Sociology at Bielefeld University’s Institute for Science and Technology Studies. His research has addressed the social development of modern science, experimental practices outside established institutions, theories of self-organization, and the aesthetics of science and technology. He is also known for the thesis on the finalization of science, developed with Gernot Böhme and Wolfgang van den Daele.
