Wolfgang Koeppen (1906–1996) was a German writer. Born in Greifswald, he died in Munich. Before devoting himself to writing, he worked in a bookshop and at a theater, among other jobs, and also spent time as a ship’s cook. He later worked as a journalist and dramaturg. Koeppen became particularly known for the novels “Tauben im Gras” (1951), “Das Treibhaus” (1953), and “Der Tod in Rom” (1954), often grouped as the “Trilogy of Failure.” His work also includes travel writing and reportage. In 1962, he was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize.
