Wolf-Dieter Storl, born in Saxony in 1942, is a cultural anthropologist and ethnobotanist. He emigrated to the United States with his parents as a child and grew up in Ohio. He first studied botany and later ethnology at Ohio State University, taught at various universities in the United States, Europe, and India, and received a doctorate in ethnology from the University of Bern in 1974. Numerous study trips and ethnobotanical field studies—including research in India, among the Northern Cheyenne, and in the Emmental—provided material for his many books and journal articles. Since 1988, he has worked as a freelance writer.
