Wladimir Arsenyev (1872–1930) was a natural scientist and an officer in the Tsarist army. He made several expeditions through the region between the Ussuri River and the Pacific Ocean. In the course of his travels, he worked as a geologist, zoologist, botanist, topographer, ethnologist and linguist, collecting extensive scientific material. He wrote more than sixty works on the Russian Far East.
